Maybe we don’t have to be scared of the A.I. revolution just yet.
Recently, Redditor Quiet_Ambassador_927 decided to give ChatGPT, which incorporates image generation from DALL-E in its premium version, a challenge: “Make a Where’s Waldo picture.”
If you’re somehow unfamiliar with Where’s Waldo, this is a series of books in which you have to search for a man named Waldo (or “Wally” in the U.K., showing once again that that whole country is wrong). Waldo, who wears a white and red striped shirt and beanie, is usually pretty hard to find — but once you do, congratulations, you’ve wasted some time.
I know this may seem simple enough, but as Quiet_Ambassador_927’s post shows, ChatGPT just couldn’t get the hang of it.

First, the A.I. makes Waldo much too large. Upon revision, Waldo is again far too big, only this time, he’s got Handsome Squidward’s jawline for some reason. Again the Redditor tries, and again the A.I. fails. -

Eventually, the Redditor throws his hands up and asks if the A.I. knows what’s wrong and whether it can fix it. It says that it does and that it can — and then proceeds to get it wrong again, throwing two very out-of-place Waldos into a medieval scene. -

Quiet_Ambassador_927 isn’t alone in testing ChatGPT’s ability to make a Where’s Waldo picture either. User DaryJohn tried to make it “increasingly difficult to find Waldo.” Spoiler alert: It is never difficult to find Waldo. -

For now, it appears that we’re safe from A.I. taking our jobs — at least, if your job is drawing illustrated puzzles for children.
