A Quick Defense of the English Language

There's a popular saying that English is actually three languages in a trenchcoat, and anyone who comes from another linguistic background can definitely see why that saying came to be. The rules of English can be infuriatingly inconsistent at times, especially with pronunciation. For example: "A rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough; after falling into a slough, he coughed and hiccoughed." I mean, really, WTF is up with all the different ways to pronounce "-ough" in that sentence?

That said, it's not like other languages don't have their pitfalls too!
