Going through male puberty is hard enough.
You might suddenly grow enormously tall and not have the frame to match it. You might start growing patchy facial hair, and due to some misplaced confidence, decide to attempt one of the worst mustaches imaginable. And, as TikTok has taught us, your center of gravity might change for the rest of your life.
This has a few impacts on your everyday existence, most of them entirely imperceptible. However, the differences in internal balance become pronounced when one attempts a certain TikTok trend — something that users on the platform call the “Center of Gravity Challenge.”
One user recently went viral sharing their own take on the challenge. In a video with more than 7.3 million views, TikTok user Merraya (@elmer.merraya) sets up the challenge, which she deceptively claims is one of strength.

The video shows her and her boyfriend Elmer in front of two plates of shaving cream. They then get on their hands and knees, followed by a descent to their elbows. From here, Merraya encourages Elmer to put his hands behind his waist and stand up, something she can do with ease. He attempts this — and immediately eats it in the shaving cream.
Unfortunately, no amount of core strength could have saved Elmer from his shaving cream fate.
This TikTok trend is nothing new, with posts on the topic hitting their peak about two years ago. As a report from Inside Edition explained, the issue comes down to where each one holds their center of mass.
“Women, generally speaking, have a lower center of mass. It’s closer to their knees, whereas for men, generally, it’s higher,” explained Craig Arnold, a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University who we’re sure had nothing better to do.
In the real world, there are a few benefits to this low center of gravity, most of them having to do with balance. However, they probably won’t play into the average person’s life.
That said, if you have a man in your life who you want to see covered in shaving cream, give the Center of Gravity Challenge a shot!
