There’s a long-standing tradition amongst Olympians where they bite their medals. Thought to have originated during a time where biting a metal was a means of testing its gold content, it’s now a sign of “look Ma, I made it!”

However, some athletes don’t take part in this tradition — or understand why it happens in the first place. Zhou Yaqin is one such athlete. Seeing her Italian competitors bite their medals while on the podium, she thought, “Alright, if you guys are doing it, so will I.”
