As a kid, one of the best things that could happen was when school would get canceled due to terrible weather, usually snow. As an adult, snow days are far less common, particularly with the number of people working from home these days. Unfortunately, bosses probably can’t be convinced that snow is preventing you from getting from your bed to your desk.

So when the opportunity to call out of work because of a snow day presents itself, people are going to seize it with both hands, because why wouldn’t they? Sadly, one boss had other ideas.

And i was hoping he would just let the store be closed for the day

TikToker Amirraa shared a video of her co-workers standing in a frozen carpark with the caption, “When everyone tried to call out but your boss drives and picks each of you up.” In a follow-up comment, Amirraa added, “And yes, he still has to drive all of [us] home when we close.”

Based on the background of the video, many commenters guessed that they worked at a Verizon store, which led to people wondering why on earth Verizon staying open in such terrible weather was so important. “For a Verizon store?!?” wrote one commenter. Another, seemingly a Verizon employee, explained, “They never be closing our store no matter what, Verizon don’t play.”

Yet more commenters shared their own stories of similarly overbearing bosses, with one person writing, “Mine did this once and we all got into an accident bc [of] the ice.” Yikes!

A couple of people shared suggestions for how workers can respond if they ever find themselves in this situation. “It’s not the lack of transportation,” one wrote. “I’m not putting my life on the line by traveling in these conditions for this wage.” Another said that they once told their manager, “I’m glad you’re experienced in driving in bad weather. Unfortunately, I don’t like getting in cars with people I don’t tend to ride with, especially in weather conditions, just for my safety. Thank you though.”

Commenters seem pretty split on whether the move was controlling or generous, with some praising the boss’ actions, arguing that they wish more bosses did this and calling Amirraa’s boss amazing. Others argued it’s ridiculous to demand that employees come in when the weather is that awful and potentially dangerous, even if the employees could have used the paycheck.

The solution is obvious: Paid snow days for everyone!
